Creating contemporary classics is not easy. But Florida-based Chris-Craft has successfully distilled more than a century of design and style into its modern lineup.
The Corsair 25 has sleek lines evolved from Chris-Craftâs runabout heritage, but updates to the cockpit and aft deck of the newest version of the 25-foot cuddy add practicality and comfort. The new Corsair 25 is 16 inches longer than earlier models with most of that extra length wisely invested in the swim platform.
The test boat comes with a full teak package, so the fibreglass swim platform, cockpit floor and foredeck are overlaid with black-seamed teak planking. The wood looks and feels great and fits in with the overall dcor.
Updates to the cockpit include stainless steel accents on the redesigned helm and companion seats, as well as chaise-style backrests on the forward ends of the U-shaped aft seating. The fridge, previously located behind the helmseat, is replaced by a drawer-style unit under the aft port-side lounge.
The convertible top stores out of sight under the engine hatch and thereâs plenty of storage space to get covers or boating gear out of sight. The cuddy is compact, with a V berth and room to install a small chemical toilet. An overhead hatch provides light and ventilation.
Chris-Craftâs signature tumble home stern lines sweeping downward \ toward the swim platform and inward as the topsides rise from the waterline are distinctive. So are the Corsairâs handling characteristics and ride.
The 25âs standard engine is a 5.7-litre V-8, but the test boat is powered by an optional 380-hp 8.2 MAG MerCruiser sterndrive pushing a twin prop Bravo Three drive. The muscle of the big-block V-8 and grip of the Bravo Three push the 20-degree deadrise 4,600-pound boat easily.
The test boat reaches 20 mph in just over five seconds, 30 mph in 7.2 seconds and 40 mph in about 10 seconds. Top speed is 57.2mph, with easy cruising speeds of 39.2mph at 3500 rpm and 33.6 mph at 3000 rpm.
The numbers are impressive for a hefty runabout. But the boatâs turning and wave carving abilitiesârock-solid yet smooth as silkâreally set it apart. With theCorsair 25, thatâs just as important as the visible clues to the boatâs classic pedigree.
