2001 Glastron GX 180 Description
Walking along the dock towards the Glastron GX180, my first impression was the roominess of the cockpit.
This not only had to do with the fact that the boat was powered by an outboard but by the combination of layout and colour – blue carpet with beige upholstery highlighted by blue and tan strips – which accentuated the size of the interior.
The first thing I did getting into the boat was on the rear bench sit and stretch out. Being over six feet tall, I was pleased to see that I had more than enough room do to this without touching the bucket seats in front of me. Beneath the rear bench seat is a combination storage area with a cooler on each side and a large bin area in the middle – ideal for lifejackets and other items.
Mounted in the middle of the boat, just behind the rear bench seat in front of the outboard motor well, is an 18-inch ski pylon. I would have loved to try out the towing capability of the Honda 130 Four Stroke on the transom, but decided against it, due to the time of year (early fall) and the brisk breeze on test day.
Forward, there are two moulded swiveling bucket seats for the driver and a passenger. At the helm the moulded bi-level instru-ment panel includes speedometer, tach, fuel, trim and hour-meter.
Between the bucket seats, built into the floor, is a large storage area for water skis and wakeboards. In front of the passenger side bucket seat, moulded into the dash, is a large glove box with the AM /FM cassette radio mounted above, accessible but protected from rain or spray.
Moving into the open bow area the first thing I always do is sit down on the seat facing forward. The area was reasonably comfortable with good back support.
Beneath the bow cushions is a storage area; positioned along the side of the seating area a stainless steel grab-bar. Glastron has incorporated drink holders at each one of the seats.
The lake was rough on test day strewn with whitecaps. What better way to test the handling of the Glastron GX 180?. Though the boat pounded against the waves, it responded to every manoeuvre quickly and precisely.
I noticed a complete feeling of security in the contoured bucket seat. Because of the con-ditions, I decided to find a calm bay to run my numbers for acceleration and performance.
Considering that the boat is rated for 150 hp and was equipped with a Honda 130, the acceleration numbers were more than reasonable and I was able to achieve a top speed of 43.7 mph, more than enough to pull a skier or get you around the lake for a leisurely day on the water with the family and friends.
I know it has been said before but I couldn’t help noticing the low sound levels of the Honda 130, especially when cruising along at 3,500 rpm. Conversation is no problem. The Glaston GX 180 is built to perform with any outboard motor, but really struts its stuff with the Honda BF 130 on the transom.
