2011 Starcraft Starstep 221 I/O Description

    By: Matt Spencer
Starcraft had a specific goal in mind for designing its boats for the 2011 model year. Satisfied with the performance from its current packages, the company set out to achieve the same performance as previous years… only with less power. No simple feat.

In the case of the Starstep 221 I/O, which had been powered with a V-8 in the past, the task was to get similar numbers with a V-6. This meant going to its third-generation hull. The planer at the stern was extended well past the outdrive to get the boat out of the water quicker with less power. The vents mid-ship were made larger to cut down on the drag and the running surface was narrowed at the transom to increase fuel economy.

By making these changes Starcraft managed to achieve its goal. With a 4.3L MerCruiser MPI powering the 221, we measured a top speed of 45.3 mph at 5100 rpm. At only 3500 rpm, the boat blasted along at 30 mph. And get this… it was on plane at just 2700 rpm – around 12 mph! I’d say goal achieved.

When you buy your Starstep 221, make sure to get the upgrade package that includes snap-in carpet, wraparound windshield and stainless rub rail, among many other features.

The layout of the 221’s interior is quite neat as well. The sun pad over the engine hatch converts to a lounge with a backrest that lifts up. This also reveals a neat walk-through to enter the cockpit, where you’ll find storage for days and great sport-style seats. At the bow, there’s seating for more people than you know and another walk-through to a swimming/boarding area that’s bigger than some swim platforms, complete with boarding ladder.

Starcraft should be quite proud of achieving its goal with its Starstep 221 I/O. Reducing the amount of power required means savings for the consumer. This also means the company achieves another goal it sets every year: to be one of the best values out on the water.
