2010 South Bay 925CR TT Description

    By: Matt Spencer

The Mercury Racing 525 EFI sterndrive is often considered the most versatile racing motor out there. It provides incredible performance and is known for being extremely reliable. This makes it perfect for the 2010 South Bay 925CR TT pontoon. Wait... what?

Yes that’s right. There has been plenty of talk over the past couple years about high performance ’toons, but this one takes the cake. The 925CR TT is 26 feet, 4 inches long, seats 14 and has 525 horses behind it. But stop shaking your head, this is a very tasteful boat.

At first glance, you see a well-appointed, impressive pontoon with facing lounge seating at the bow, a moveable cooler/ottoman, an L-shaped lounge in the aft cockpit, and a most impressive helm station with Mercury SmartCraft gauges and Garmin GPS.

Then you hear this thing start and your hair stands on end. You don’t expect to hear straight headers on a pontoon boat. The hydraulic hatch opens and there it is. An engine found on most performance boats.

But this is, after all, a performance pontoon. I can’t go over all the construction details that go into each South Bay pontoon, but I assure you that they’re built for this. South Bay’s cross members are spaced closer together, leading to 70 per cent more of them than the average pontoon. So the structure can support the horsepower and resulting speeds.

On the water, it was evident as the ride was smooth and enjoyable. There was no twisting or shaking in the frame from the extreme torque. You know when you’re in a nice car and drive really fast without noticing it? That’s what happens with the South Bay 925CR TT. I looked down and it was holding a comfortable cruise of 43 mph at 4500 rpm. At the 525’s rev limit of 5300 rpm, we hit 56 mph on GPS.

In this fast-paced performance ’toon race, South Bay obviously intends to make it hard for its competitors to keep up.
