When setting out to buy an entry-level multi species fishing boat, you tend to lower your expectations a little. But when I found out I would be testing Princecraftâs Sport 182, I kept mine high. And why not? Princecraft puts a lot of dedication in every boat they make.
And, as sure as it floats, I wasnât let down. At 18 and a half feet, the Sport 182 makes great use of space and the aft bench seat best exemplifies this. What starts out as a padded bench aft, flips down into a large, roomy casting deck with a base for a pedestal seat. This also reveals access for the battery compartment and ice chest.
The helm and co-captain seats are plush pedestal seats as well that can be placed in the bow base or one of the two bases to aft that are revealed when the bench is up. The entire cockpit is carpet lined, which really helps cut the noise when running.
This 182 also had the optional wireless MotorGuide trolling motor, Lowrance X-50 DS fish/depth finder and live/baitwells in the bow, meaning itâs ready to buy and catch fish. But this boat is more than a fisher. Just put in the padded bow cushions when the rods go away in the large in-floor locker and itâs time for fun.
On the water, the performance was just as impressive. The 115 EFI jumped the Sport 182 to 20 mph in a respectable 6.3 seconds and cruised at a steady 25 mph at 4000 rpm. The turns were sharp and smooth, great for smaller rivers, but the high gunwales can handle the big lakes as well.
Although the Sport 182 doesnât have the same finishing youâll find on Princecraftâs more elaborate models, this doesnât mean you wonât catch fish. If you want to save some money and get a boat and trailer that you can take on a great fishing trip, the Sport 182 would make a great catch.
