The concept of the deck boat has always intrigued me. Combining the space and amenities of a pontoon with the performance and handling of a bowrider makes perfect sense. The 2010 Princecraft Ventura 220WS has these qualities in spades.
Boarding was convenient and easy over the extra-wide walk-thru bow section that also happens to be carpet lined. At first look, the plush vinyl seats just scream comfort and my goodness they were! Underneath, there was plenty of storage and a spot for a table â perfect for enjoying some afternoon snacks.
A quick stop to check the in-floor storage mid-ship revealed no surprises, but the helm was a pleasant surprise. The captainâs chair was bolstered with armrests worthy of a captain and the shaded dash housed the stainless trimmed gauges. The Mercury Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) controls for the 200-hp Verado was the most pleasant surprise of all.
Continuing through the boat, the port side entertainment centre â equipped with sink, grab handle and AM/FMCD stereo â was cosied up next to the L-shaped lounge, which could fit a crowd around the moulded table with drink holders. Access to the stern was through a hinged lift gate that turns into a privacy enclosure for changing.
During the water test, I couldnât get over how quiet the Ventura rode. At a cruise of 32 mph at 4500 rpm, the 220 glided along at a whisper of 92.8 dbA at the helm. This is thanks to the 0.110-gauge aluminum used along with the abundance of carpet throughout the boat.
In turns, the ride was stable but the real pleasure was the Verado and how it took us up to a top speed of 45.3 mph without being overpowering.
When you add on the optional wakeboard tower, the Princecraft Ventura 220WS really becomes a high functioning boat thatâs great for the cottage dock and can entertain a crowd at 40 mph.
