2007 Smoker Craft 17 Pro Angler Description
The 2007 Smoker Craft 17 Pro Angler

was designed and built for the fishing

enthusiast looking for big boat features

and performance in a smaller and more easily

    trailered package.

With a centreline length of 16 foot, 10 inches,

    a 91-inch beam and 950-pound hull, this is a

boat you can trailer behind the typical family

minivan as well as a pickup or SUV. That's

important because one of the most enjoyable

parts of angling is fishing new lakes and rivers.

Some of the key fishing features on the 17

Pro Angler include locks on the storage compartments,

three removable casting seats, the safety

of toe kick side panels, a forward-mounted, 30-

gallon live well, easy-to-clean vinyl floor and the

    standard Lowrance X52 fish finder.

Standard equipment on the Smoker Craft 17

Pro Angler includes a Minn Kota 55PD trolling

motor with a quick disconnect bracket already

installed at the bow. A lockable space for your

trolling motor battery is located between the

    twin consoles.

Another important fishing feature is the

port-side rod locker, which is also suitable for

paddles and other large items. This compartment

has locking latches to keep your belongings

secure if you've trailered them to a tournament

    or fishing lodge.

Typical of this type of fishing boat, the 17

Pro Angler has both bow and stern raised casting

platforms so two can fish in comfort. The seat

bases have a powder coat paint job rather than

raw aluminum bases, which can start looking

scruffy after a few seasons. Underneath the aft

casting platform on the starboard side is the

main battery. To port, is a dry storage area suitable

    for your tackle box.

With a package price that includes the 70-hp

    Suzuki four-stroke engine, a ShoreLand'r bunk

trailer, the trolling motor and other accessories,

the Smoker Craft comes in at an attractive retail

price of $22,495. The company is able to keep

the price down by making a large production

run of the same model, so the 17 Pro Angler is

only available in the attractive beige interior.

That's not such a hard trade to make when you

get other features like 0.100-gauge, one-piece

bottom construction, a Taylor Made curved glass

windshield with swing open centre section, sidemounted

    Suzuki control, full instruments and

wide side gunwales suitable for installing downriggers.

Out on the water, it had a quiet and solid

ride. With two people aboard and three quarters

of a tank of fuel, the 70-hp Suzuki turned in a

lively performance. From a standing start, planing

speed came in at 4.7 seconds and it took

only 9.2 seconds to reach 5000 rpm. Trimmed

right up and flying, the boat showed 35 mph as

the top speed at 5700 rpm.

The boat was nicely set up with steering that

was light and easy to manage. We could haul the

wheel hard over at wide open speeds in a moderate

chop and the boat would just turn in tighter

    and tighter.

The electronic fuel injection on the Suzuki

delivers instant starting and a nearly silent idle.

Even at a 3500 rpm cruising speed, we only

recorded 82 dbA. Because it runs out so nicely,

though, you're not likely to spend much time at

3500 rpm! This is a boat that feels solid and controllable

right up to wide open speeds, taking

you to the fishing grounds and back quickly and

    in comfort.
