2007 Bayliner 175 Description
    Bayliner Marine Corp. is globally recognized

    for building boats of style and

    size, including motor yachts up to 57

    feet in length.

    However, most day boaters are more familiar

    with Bayliner's sport boat line, especially those

    popular bowrider models that are so well-suited

    to the cottage. If you happen to be looking for a

    keep-it-simple yet attractively designed boat in

    the 17-foot range, Bayliner's 175 may well be for

    you - if for no other reason than its incredibly

    low price.

    In Canada, the 175 sells for under $15,000,

    resting on its own trailer and powered by a carbureted

    but reliable 3L MerCruiser sterndrive.

    How does Bayliner do it? Offering very few

    options is one way. Basically, you get what you

    need, not heart-warming features that drive up

    the cost. Another way was to build a manufacturing

    facility in Mexico, where costs are minimized

    and output is high.

    Though one might expect fit-and-finish to

    be less than perfect, it is very good. The 175's

    gelcoat is polished and smooth, while overall

    construction is solid. As it is a mass-produced

    boat, there isn't a lot of time put into fine-finishing

    certain areas, such as under-the-floor storage

    bins.

    If you're not a seasoned boater, jumping

    behind the wheel of something that moves with

    wind, waves and current - and doesn't have

    brakes - can be a bit overwhelming. Some

    builders design helms that are way too busy,

    mounting instruments and switches in awkward

    to see and reach places. However, Bayliner

    understands an operator's main focus should be

    on the water and, therefore, mounts all of the

    175's analog gauges and accessory toggle switches

    on one highly visible panel.

    The 175's sensible cockpit seating arrangement

    includes a bucket seat for the driver, a

    back-to-back lounge for companion passengers

    and two integrated aft jump seats flanking the

    engine compartment. For its length, the 175

    feels very roomy, especially when the wraparound

    windshield is open for passengers to

    move forward into the bow.

    For waterskiers, a stainless steel ski-tow eye

    has been mounted securely aft, and a huge gear

    locker has been built into the floor. Just because

    Bayliner keeps options to a minimum doesn't

    mean there is any shortage of convenience and

    safety features like beverage holders and grab

    handles.

    Due to Bayliner's affiliation with Brunswick

    Corp., engines are readily available at the best

    possible price. The 175's well-installed standard

    power package is ideal; MerCruiser's carbureted,

    135 horsepower, 3L motor has been in their

    lineup for years - famous for being quick, reliable

    and easy to maintain.

    Throttling up, the 175 accelerates to plane in

    record time - 2.2 seconds to be exact. From

    there, the hull lifts crisply and requires little positive

    trim to reach 30 mph in 5.4 seconds and 40

    mph in 8.9 seconds. As usual, the speedometer

    indicated a top speed slightly higher than GPS,

    boasting 49 mph compared with 47 mph at

    4900 rpm.

    Though the lake wasn't unusually bumpy, I

    was able to generate some waves in order to

    observe how the hull handles in rough water.

    Considering it weighs just 1,900 pounds, the

    175 slices through sloppy conditions very well,

    remaining spirited and nimble at high speed.

    Some people may call Bayliner's 175 an

    "entry level" runabout, a term overused by

    builders hoping to see customers upgrade to

    larger, more luxurious boats. I personally think

    this model makes sense for anyone wanting "a

    bang for their buck" - good value, great price.
