2007 Princecraft Versailles 20LP Description
The Princecraft Versailles 20 LP is a perfect

example of why the sales of pontoon

boats are steadily increasing year after

    year.

New for 2007, this model has three tubes

rather than the more common two tubes. The

third tube, mounted down the centreline of the

boat, totally changes its performance characteristics.

Our test boat was equipped with a new

Mercury Verado 150 and the performance was

    comparable to most 20-foot runabouts.

The attraction of pontoon boats is the large

interior space with an expanse of flat floor covered

in rich carpet and surrounded by plushly upholstered

seating for the whole family and lots of

friends. Two-tube boats can push along at speeds

in the 20 mph range, which is adequate for most

    people's needs. However, with a three-tube boat

equipped with an engine like this, all areas of a

small lake are easily within reach.

Starting at the bow, you get a swing-open

centre door, docking lights, cleats and a (surprisingly

small) bow eye. The port and starboard seats

have sun lounge backs, heavy padding and storage

inside. I noticed the carpeting looked particularly

    rich on this model.

There's another opening gate on the port side

and aft, an L-shaped seat, again with sun lounge

back, and a removable picnic table. Princecraft

uses rotocast plastic seat bases to avoid rot and

they are designed to drain rainwater so your life

    jackets stay dry.

The helm has a large fibreglass console with

drink holders, storage underneath and a sink with

a cold water supply, which is handy when picnicking.

The helm has a Venturi windscreen,

gauges for trim, tach, speed, fuel and volt meter. I

could best describe the helm seat itself as a throne!

Princecraft has come up with one of the most

comfortable helm seats I've experienced yet.

At the stern is a sun lounge with storage

under and a lift-up section that turns into a privacy

enclosure for people who want to change into

their bathing suit or where you could install a

porta-potty to extend your day cruising.

Other nice features include the Clarion CD

and Sirius-equipped stereo system. When you get

to the old swimming hole, there's a stern door to

the transom where you will find an especially

large boarding ladder - great for swimming or

    retrieving a fallen skier.

With the third tube and optional Mercury

Verado 150, the Versailles 20 LP turns in some

serious performance. We hit 20 mph from a

standing start in only 3.8 seconds and the Verado

spun up to a silky smooth 6000 rpm doing 40

mph and only showing 86 dbA on the sound

    level meter.

Some may think 40 mph is too fast for an

open boat. Sure, everybody will get blown

around, but it's going to be hard for the driver to

keep his hands off the throttle! Instead of pushing

the tubes through the water, the boat lifts its bow,

trims right up and even delivers amazing handling.

In turns, the weight transfers to the outside

of the turn, so it leans out a bit like a car does.

Nevertheless, the three tubes hung on even when

we cranked it right over hard. On top of that, it

strides up over the waves in a confidence inspiring

    fashion.

If you want pontoon accommodation but

weren't satisfied with the turn of speed, try the

three tube Princecraft Versailles 20 LP.
