2006 Yamaha Yamaha SX230 High Output Description
Leave it to Yamaha, a global leader in marine power, to develop an allpurpose sportboat that can go, well… almost anywhere.

Those who have yet to drive a true jet-powered boat would be amazed. Other than sharing a proven propulsion system, Yamaha's bowrider and wakeboard series of boats are far removed from their Waverunner cousins. The SX and AR models are quality-built vessels that could easily qualify as contenders for boat of the year awards.

Since jet-propelled boats go where others cannot, the advantage may go to them. Driving the new SX230, a full-bodied bowrider powered by two Yamaha High Output MR-1 engines, I immediately recognized the potential for cottagers living with low water levels. Certain bays around Lake Huron have been virtually off limits for years, and for those on lakes that drain in the fall, a good jet boat would extend the boating season.

The driving experience itself is another great reason to try one. Each engine is a 1052cc four cylinder, fourstroke powerplant giving the SX230 a combined 320 hp. Many comparative 23 footers have 5.7 L I/Os that generate 260 hp or possibly a 6.2 L engine putting out 320 hp, so Yamaha clearly made a good choice in powering this boat, and levelling the playing field.

The magic number to hit is 50 mph. Coincidently, the SX230 does 51. Acceleration, however, is where jets have a clear advantage over sterndrives. That a 23-foot boat weighing 2900 lbs can plane in 2.5 seconds says something. Bursting out of the hole, the SX230 hit 35 mph in 6.2 seconds and 45 mph in just over 10. Wow!

Mid-range punch is great too. Cruising along at 25 mph, the boat accelerates to 45 mph in 9 seconds. Reviewing the performance data, the big difference noted is how high these engines rev compared to a typical I/O motor. At 51 mph, the Yamaha turns 10,000 rpm.

We were also impressed with how smooth the power seemed, due in part to 155mm hyper-flow jet pumps with stainless steel impellers. To reduce the chance of debris collection, there are water intake filters and jet-pump clean-out plugs with push buttons which allow direct access to the inlet from inside the boat.

The boat itself is a well-constructed 20 degree deadrise deep-vee, with a draft of 18 inches. There is a separate fibreglass liner which combines the floor and stringer system, including all components for mounting the engines. The liner then bonds to the hull with polyurethane adhesive. Foam floatation is added for safety and structural integrity.

With seating for 10, the SX230 High Output comes in black or red, both equally sharp colours highlighted by current graphics. Being the largest of Yamaha's modest fleet, the boat comes well appointed and loaded with storage compartments. We counted 15, including a large in-floor ski/wakeboard locker.

Boarding at the stern we were struck by the size and detail of the twotier swim platform, which Yamaha refers to as a patio area. It even has room for a dinette table! Now why haven't more sportboat builders thought of this? There is a centre walk-thru transom just one small step above the first tier for access into the main cockpit.

Through decades of building seasonal motorsport products, Yamaha knows durable, well-stitched upholstery materials are needed for the U-shaped, horseshoe aft bench, twin flip-up captain's buckets and the seat pads forward. The SX230 has a great looking dash, filled with visible gauges and switches. The windshield is curved and protective, well suited to the style of this boat.

As good as it looks, the SX230 is great fun to drive. Jet-power has yet to make a huge impact on the mainstream full-size sportboat market, but if Yamaha gets their message out, boaters will surely jump aboard. The SX230 High Output is more than a new spin on boating - it can take you where you haven't gone before.
