2006 Smoker Craft Smokercraft Vectra 191 Deck Boat Description
Smokercraft from New Paris, Indiana builds a wide range of boats in fibreglass and aluminum and their line of deck boats brings some fresh thinking to the Canadian market.

The concept of a deck boat is to provide the accommodation and flat floor that you might find on a pontoon boat combined with the ride and performance of a fibreglass deep vee hull. There is a lot to be said for the design concept. The deck boat design opens up the entire deck area for passenger accommodation. In the case of our 19 foot test boat, it has a 10 passenger capacity or 1,400 pounds of cargo.

The Smokercraft line lets buyers choose from a wide range of trim levels, much the way Detroit sells cars. You can load up your Smokercraft with luxury and convenience options or you can keep the sticker price to a minimum. Our test boat had an as tested price of $32,995 as a boat, motor and trailer package including the enthusiastic 175 hp Suzuki engine.

Deck boats are all about living space. Beginning at the stern, there is a storage locker in the transom, a swim platform and walk-through into the interior. A flip down boarding ladder is included and a nice touch is the fender baskets mounted in the motor well. Entering by the transom walk-through, there is a port side bench seat with storage underneath. This stretches all the way up to the bow and wraps around the starboard side back to the helm console.

A bow step-through leads to a forward deck finished in nonskid fibreglass like the transom, and it has another flip down boarding ladder. That could be a handy feature for retrieving a fallen skier at the bow rather than beside the engine and the propeller at the stern.

The helm has a swivel bucket, sport steering wheel, a wind deflector and a complete array of instruments. A four speaker marine stereo system was in the dashboard. Other features we liked include the interior courtesy lights for night use, 8 cup holders, the large storage area under the helm binnacle and the spacious under floor storage for paddles and water skis. This is certainly a boat that is well suited for wake sports and towing duties.

The Smokercraft factory lists the standard engine horsepower as 115 but our test boat had 175. Perhaps it was this additional power or, perhaps it was the four blade prop or, maybe the way the engine had been mounted but, we found this boat was very sensitive to trim and super eager when we hit the throttle. The big Suzuki hit 20 mph in 5.3 seconds, 30 mph in 7.8 and raced on to a top end of 52 mph at 6,200 rpm; in our opinion too fast for a deck boat.

Very few boats really go 50 miles an hour or faster and believe me, at that rate your Coke will blow right out of your hand in a boat that's completely open this way. There were a few grab handles in the interior but generally, not many places to hang on when the driver gets on the throttle. The Suzuki is a sensational engine but we think that this boat would still perform very nicely with significantly less power even for pushing a load for waterskiing.

The vee bottom is a 13 degree deadrise. That is not a very deep vee but we felt the Smokercraft rode nicely at mid-range speeds and handled well too. The boat will turn in nice and tight but the Suzuki needed to be trimmed down to avoid cavitation. With all that power, it is hard to resist just nailing it and the Smokercraft feels like it is flying over waves. The boat cruised at 3,500 rpm doing 22 mph. That was serene. Does it need 175 hp? Not for family use but then again, if you want to do a bit of tournament fishing…
