2006 Starcraft Starcraft Aurora 2000 OB Description
The purpose of a deck boat is simple: to entertain a crowd and get them to wherever, in a hurry. Of course depending on your guests, their list might also include some sun-worshipping, fishing or swimming along the way. The Starcraft Aurora handles it all in a simple and timeless design.

Stepping aboard the huge optional swim platform our test boat was fitted with, I was first impressed with the deep anti-skid pattern in the gel coat - very safe. The versatile layout caught my attention next. Through the step-thru port-side transom door, the seating for 12 begins at the rear bench seat. It has a wide base and comfortably high back. The extra wide helm seat has a flip-up bolster and swivels to face the port bench seat when entertaining. Ahead of the helm is a sun lounge that will accommodate even the longest legged of your guests. To reach the bow, there is an opening at the forward end of the interior. The bow is actually another large platform like the aft swim platform and has a four-step folding ladder under a composite hatch cover.

The 35-oz vinyl seating continues down the port side to mid-ships, opposite the helm. Starcraft uses composite seat bases and self-draining foam to ensure that what you're sitting on will last for years and is probably dry! I explored further and found that storage space abounds; in the floor, under the helm and under every seat. Entertaining is made easy with a manual pump faucet and small sink in front of the helm, and fore and aft table pedestal mounts.

I was anxious to test the modified vee-hull in the light chop on Georgian Bay just outside Waubaushene. The 140hp Suzuki started up immediately and I did a double take on my sound meter - 71dbA as I putted away from the dock.

I recorded an average hole shot time to plane of 3.78 seconds which is excellent for 2300 plus pounds of boat rated for a maximum of 200 hp. The digital ignition of Suzuki's four-stoke 140hp inline four cylinder delivered consistent power from idle straight through to my top speed of 43.5 mph @ 6200 rpm. I was able to stay on plane down to a surprisingly slow 21.5 mph, especially considering the Aurora has no trim tabs. However, with a boat load of guests and gear, the planning speed will no doubt need to increase. Also pleasantly surprising was the lack of engine noise. I could honestly see myself carrying on a conversation with my guests at full throttle given the 95dbA sound level I recorded. The Clarion AM/FM/CD sound system with 4 speakers had no trouble reducing the Suzuki to a background noise as I put the hull through our standard test protocol.

The bow rise on planing was a little more than I would have expected but at no time obscured my view seated at the helm. Cornering at speed through successively tighter turns, the hull ran relatively flat and dry and as expected from a vee-hull, there was little or no lateral slippage despite my efforts. The hull noise was amazingly quiet given the chop on the bay. The feeling of the ride produced by this hull is solid confidence while at the same time it's a driver's hull - responsive and fun. The Suzuki produced wonderful mid-range acceleration that I could actually feel forcing me ever so slightly back into the upholstery. Thanks to a best-in-class power-to-weight ratio and an industry-first four-stroke oil-cooler, there was no waiting for the 2044cc powerhead to develop the horsepower - it was there immediately with the touch of the throttle.

Starcraft's 100 plus years of boat building are evident in the use of quality materials - right down to the stainless rub rail. Both the layout and the performance of the Aurora deck boat ensure that this boat serves it's purpose - so well in fact, that you and your guests may regularly flip to see who gets to drive and who gets to ride.
