2005 Sea Ray SeaRay 220 Sundeck Description
Goldilocks would have made a great boat tester. Confronted with all four of Sea Ray's unique Sundecks, a 200, 220, 240 and a 270, Goldy would have determined that the 220 was "just right." Not that the others aren't splendid boats, but the 220 deploys Sea Ray's list of fun-in-the-sun features in the most complete and natural-feeling way. For example, the 200 hasn't got room for the large enclosed compartment necessary for head and change room facilities. In contrast, the big 270's little sleeping cabin seems to be trying too hard.

The 220 also looks right. Sea Ray's "deckboat" concept differs dramatically from that of the other manufacturers. Instead of squeezing back and distorting the gunwales until the craft looks like a monohull pontoon boat, the Sundeck entails a modified bowrider layout with the helm and windshield moved aft enough to provide an enlarged open bow. In turn, the rear cockpit is designed to maximize available space and the engine cover is cleverly integrated into the rear seating and the transom/swim platform area. Both from outside the boat and from behind the helm the windshield is noticeably tall, a feature that provides a respite from the wind on a boat that is otherwise so open. Again, give them their due, the other three Sundecks are handsome boats, but the 220 accepts the changes in outline more gracefully than the others.

That said, let's run down the funin- the-sun list, starting at the bow. Concealed above the stem is a boarding ladder — pull up on the beach and step off the front. The bow area provides ample seating and includes a table mount and its own ice chest, but its real joy is as a two-chaise lounger. Those long seats are roomy and relaxing. The space directly under the windshield, which often goes unexploited, is utilized for the spacious head/changeroom compartment on the port side. To starboard, in front of the helm, a storage compartment holds the two removable tables and a portable cooler.

The stern cockpit truly makes the 220 a standout. At first glance, it's the usual two buckets and a wide L-shaped lounger. But notice that the buckets have flip-ups thick enough to lift you above that high windshield. Then note that the portside bucket, when rotated 180 degrees, mates with the stern's Lbench to create a rear-facing lounge seat. (Let's give Sea Ray a gold star for this one.) So tidy it's almost unnoticed against the starboard side is a small sink and storage area. Tucked right behind, just past the transom's entry door, is a hand shower. Both sink and shower are supplied from a 10-gallon freshwater tank. Rounding out the sunshine facilities is a massive swim platform topped with a ski tow hitch (a tower is optional) and furnished with another concealed boarding ladder.

To block the burning rays, the 220 is served by a large Bimini and (horrors) if the weather turns inclement, the entire rear cockpit can be enclosed with zippered curtains.

This will be an easy boat to look after. The Sundecks have a full, hose-itdown fibreglass liner and the 220's Berber carpet snaps out in convenient sections. We were impressed with the boat's decor, a simple treatment in taupe and cream. Sea Ray has eliminated the glitz without losing the luxury.

Powered with the standard 5.0 MPI and Alpha drive, the 220's performance also impressed. But we, and the boat, would have been happier with the dual-prop Bravo III.The Sundeck is a 22-foot hull with a 21-degree deadrise that weighs in at a hefty 4,500 pounds. The acceleration and speed figures are respectable, but that was with just the two skinny McRaes on board. You could feel the prop slip at the start of acceleration and it wanted to let go of the water when trimmed out for maximum speed. Given that these boats are intended to carry Goldy and all the bears, go for the Bravo. And have some fun in the sun.
