2001 Scout 202 Dorado Description
The designers at Scout Boats would probably be horrified if we called the 202 Dorado a “fish ’n ski”. That term conjures up images of often-ugly dual-purpose aluminum boats. Functional boats, nonetheless, that have served to keep peace in the families of many avid fishermen.
The Dorado is a true multi-purpose boat with size and equipment for serious fishing, while providing style and amenities that rival any flashy bowrider. The sportsman will appreciate the tall dual-console helm for stand-up running, along with rod storage, aerated livewell plus an insulated fishbox and a cooler. The family will enjoy the spacious and comfortable bow area, as large as that on some deck boats. Water toy fans will appreciate the sports gear storage locker, the swim platform and the ski tow bar.
At rest, the eight-foot-wide Dorado is rock-solid like a pontoon boat. Out on the water in a stiff St. Lawrence River chop, the Dorado cleaves the waves with softness rivalling a deep-V.
Pontoon? Deep-V? The key is found in Scout’s Air Assist hull. The bow has what looks like a normal V-hull with a tall, slender stem. But the chines curve gently to the water where the outer edge of the V or a hard splash rail is usually found. Those soft chines actually blend into flat surfaces forming the outer rails of the Air Assist channels running the length of the bottom.
At rest, the wide outer rails act as sponsons, pontoons if you will, and the hull sits as steady as a floating dock. Come on plane, however, and the Dorado gets air-lifted by the channels and the waves are sliced by the centre V.
The Air Assist allows the Dorado to achieve a good turn of speed, 47 mph. Unfortunately the dealer had not yet fully rigged the brand new test boat and our acceleration runs were hampered by a lack of dash instruments. The times in the data panel are estimates based on GPS readings, close but not definitive. We can tell you that the Scout labours for a moment while the hull breaks free of the water and then the boat takes off like a rocket.
We had similar problems establishing a cruising speed and rpm for the Dorado. But, like all two-strokes, DFI or not, the OptiMax had a spot on the power curve where it cleared out and ran quietly smooth. On the GPS, that was at 27 mph.
The Dorado is a less exciting ride than the first Scout we tested — a 175
Sportfish — but its sea manners and handling are impeccable, providing a
safe, dry, comfortable pass-age under all conditions and speeds.
Build quality is a hallmark of any good bluewater boat and the Scouts are no exception. There’s a high level of ’glass work; seat mounts, stainless rails, hinges and fittings easily pass the hardware test.
No, we won't call the scout Dorado a fish ’n ski. But it will fish. And it will ski. And there will be peace in the family
