2005 Polar Kraft Polar Kraft V 165 SC Description
When it comes to familyoriented recreational boats used primarily for fishing or hunting,Polar Kraft offers up a selection of craft . . . er, kraft . . . that is sure to please anglers and hunters alike. In fact, the company carries over 75 models.Recently we had the opportunity to check out Polar Kraft's Kodiak V 165 SC, powered by one of Evinrude new E-TEC outboards.

A large bow area or "casting deck" on the V 165 SC offers plenty of room to manoeuvre. Hinged hatches provide access to one of three compartments. There's a baitwell to port and a 44" 18.8 gallon livewell to starboard.A forward hatch reveals dry storage, and a raised section at the bow provides convenient anchor storage. An optional trolling motor was mounted at the bow, which conveniently plugs into a 12-volt power supply panel complete with a remote trim/tilt switch for the main engine.

The side console layout makes for easy access to the spacious cockpit. Comfortable high-back seats are provided for the operator and two passengers. The cockpit seats can be removed and relocated to a variety of pedestal bases, including those on the casting decks fore and aft.

The helm is simple yet functional, with the analog gauges mounted neatly on the upper and left portions of the moulded dash. Two large gauges display speed and rpm and four smaller gauges are used for voltage, trim, and fuel. To the right of the steering wheel you'll find rocker switches for the nav lights, baitwell and horn. A quick-release windscreen is a handy feature, and I like the way Polar Kraft left enough room on the dash to flush- or surfacemount electronics such as an optional fishfinder or AM/FM/CD stereo. Another interesting feature I noticed was the fuel filler cap on the starboard gunnel. It is placed in a moulded housing that prevents minor spills from entering the boat.

To keep your fishing gear safe and secure,Polar Kraft has locking rod storage to port.Additional storage for batteries and other gear can also be found aft, adjacent to the casting deck.

Power of choice was a 75-hp Evinrude E-TEC. This technology, recently unveiled by Evinrude's parent company, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP), is a major innovation in outboard motor design. According to BRP, the E-TEC models offer the lowest emissions levels in the industry, a quiet signature sound, and extremely low maintenance.

Advancing the throttle, the hull stepped up onto plane in 2.5 seconds. A comfortable cruising speed was found at 3,500 rpm, where I recorded a speed of 26.8 mph on GPS.At wideopen throttle,we hit 42.9 mph at 5,250 rpm.The ride was quiet, the result of both the engine and hull design.

Hull strength and stiffness is gained through Polar Kraft's Torque Control Design, which consists of an I-Beam longitudinal stringer system, a reinforced bow support, and torque boxes. The open cavities of these internal components are filled with closed cell foam, which offer sound dampening, and positive flotation capabilities.

In addition to the internal components, the hull features reverse chines, strategically placed lifting strakes and a double-layered keel. According to the manufacturer, these components provide additional strength and better lift, speed and increased stability.

Whether you're an angler or not, the 165 SC provides a great combination of performance and comfort. Paired up with Evinrude's new ETEC engine, it should assure you of a great day on the water, even if the fish aren't biting.
