2004 Bayliner 265 Description
How can a boat designer incorporate over 30 feet of features in only 26? Innovate, innovate. Jettison the idea that anyone would use a vessel displacing 6,000 pounds for trailerboating, With that out of the way, pencil in plenty of freeboard and punch the beam out to nine and a half feet (2.87 metres). Keep it wide right to the waterline and set it on an expanded version of Bayliner's efficient Advanced Planing System hull. Next, figure out novel ways to include two large berths, an eating area, a functional galley and a spacious head below decks without compromising the open air seating in the cockpit above. Easy for us to say…

At first glance, you'd swear the 265 is too small for all that, even with its imposing hull height and bold lines. It looks more like a cuddy day cruiser. Step through the transom door, however, and you'll find a spacious two-level cockpit. At the stern, two benches face each other and can accommodate a removable oval table between them. However, the rear bench will intrude when the space is used for docking, swimming or tow sports. No problem,it folds away against the transom.

The other bench is part of an innovative seating system Bayliner calls the "Sun Chaiser." A bad play on words, but it works. The back cushion tilts ahead to be used by the rear area's bench or astern to create a large L-shaped sun lounger that wraps around the port side of the helm cockpit. No seat tricks at the fully instrumented helm station, but the designers did make the pilot's chair wide enough to share with a child - or a very close friend.

Some considered decisions had to be made belowdecks. The access door is wider at the top for shoulders, narrower at the bottom for feet to go through. The stairs are minimal, narrow and steep without an adequate handrail, the only apparent miscue on the blueprint. We're okay with the stairs but adding a rail is a must, particularly for the little ones.

Bayliner had the good sense to keep the starboard-side head full-sized and full height and then pencilled in everything else around it. There's not much floor space in the cabin, but it is centred at the lowest point in the hull - allowing for surprisingly generous headroom. The floor is there primarily to serve the galley, which is situated opposite the head. Like everything else, the kitchen is compact but fully functional. With the Advantage Pac of options, it's equipped with an alcohol/ electric single burner, a microwave and a small refrigerator.

The Swiss Army Knife approach to boat design continues with the V-berth/dinette combination. At night, the table top and banquette cushions fold down to create an extended sleeping surface. The mid-cabin berth is a winner and for some very simple reasons. Bayliner adds headroom where your head is by utilising the space under the Sun Chaiser lounge up top. Light and ventilation are provided by a good-sized window in the base of the lounge. Innovate, innovate.

Performance with the 5.0 and Alpha One is adequate, in the proper sense of that word. But if you have the need for speed (another five mph), would like much more sprightly acceleration, greater load tolerance, better fuel economy and a longer range, opt for the 5.7 and Bravo III.

At just under $80,000, you'll have a remarkable boat.
