2004 Princecraft Princecraft Versailles 26SS Description
While the helm chair is usually the best-built seat on the boat, Princecraft's Versailles 26SS has a couple of passenger chairs that rival the captains' for comfort. In fact, when I walked on board the 2004 Versailles 26SS at Princecraft's press conference and new-product rollout last summer, I sat in one of the bow-area captains' chairs and thought I might not move for the rest of the day.

I can honestly say it had to be one of the most comfortable boat seats I have experienced, especially when you consider it is not even at the helm. These two captain chairs, along with the rest of the lounges on the pontoon are ultra-plush but made of heavyweight upholstery for durability.

The seating area on this 26' craft is tremendous, with two captains' chairs in the bow area, two facing three-seat lounges just further aft, then the helm with seat and is a large L-shaped lounge on to port.At the stern, there's a large popup privacy enclosure where an adult can stand upright to change their clothing.

The pontoon is constructed with 5052-H36 marine grade aluminum alloy. Throughout the boat, where appropriate, Princecraft uses stainless steel fasteners. The rails along the sides and front of the boat are made with 1.25" anodized aluminum with side gates 24" in height. On top of the pop-up privacy enclosure is a padded sun deck. Front, rear and side gate provide easy access on and off the boat and to the engine when necessary.

The large fibreglass helm console has an integrated galley unit, including sink and portable water tank. The control panel area sports a thermoformed wood grain dash panel and mahogany steering wheel. To protect the driver from the wind, a smoked windscreen is mounted on the helm is with quick release.

The standard instrumentation is comprised of a Pilot-Digital multifunction speedometer gauge, tachometer, trim and fuel gauge.

To protect everyone from the sun, the Versailles 26SS is equipped with a colour co-ordinated convertible bimini top. New for 2004 will be the graphics package along with a finger pinch guard and gate holder, halogen docking lights with chrome bezels and optional refreshment table with sliding top and cooler to mention a few.

Taking the Versailles 26SS out for a sea trial was an enjoyable experience. The large pontoon performed better than expected. Starting with top end, I did not expect the large pontoon to get above 20 mph based on previous experience with other pontoons but the fourstroke Mercury 90 hp pushed the boat to a top speed of 23.4 mph. That doesn't sound like much but it is more than plenty when you consider the primary purpose of the boat is to take a large number of friends on a leisurely cruise on the lake or river.

I found the ideal cruise speed at about 13 mph at 4,000 rpm.The acceleration was considerably quicker than I anticipated as we reached 10 mph in 2.78 seconds and 15 mph in 3.53 seconds. The pontoon tracked well through the water, but I found it a little tricky when bringing it back to the dock. It's easy to forget how big the boat is until you are trying to manoeuvre with a single outboard.

The boat's size could come in handy, however. You don't often think of overnighting with a pontoon, but if the waters allow for travel the camper-top option gives you more than most boats when it comes to livability area.

For cottagers or boaters who have large families or lots of friends the Versailles 26SS is the ideal boat for many enjoyable scenic boat rides.
