2004 Mastercraft MasterCraft X-Star Description
From my vantage point, there isn't a hotter looking towboat made than MasterCraft's X-Star.

Blasting across the lake with its pickle-fork bow, ZeroFlex Flyer Tower, JetPack tower speakers and towermounted night navigation lights, it is one radical machine. Sporting wicked X-Star hull graphics, this boat is in your face.

Building on the lines of MasterCraft's sophisticated Maristar model, the fully redesigned X-Star was introduced last year. It has a unique hull design said to produce exceptional wake quality, something wakeboarders live for.

From a purely aesthetic point of view, the X-star's forked bow looks similar to a racing catamaran or tunnel boat. In truth, the design is more functional than it is fast, as it substantially increases bow space allowing for two large adults to stretch out facing forward on twin luxurious sun lounges. With the help of a telescoping boarding ladder, you can easily access the boat from the front.

You might say the X-Star is very accommodating. There are multiple storage locations located throughout the boat, massive in capacity and easy to reach by pulling on a seat back or cushion. While the tower's three-inch tubing (with solid billet legs and X-Star logos) encourages you to strap on a board, you can easily hide whatever other watersports equipment is brought aboard.

The X-Star has a most unusual, spaceage instrument cluster called the X-Pod. Three large torpedo-shaped machined billet aluminum housings hold the speedometer, tach and a skier's dream known as PerfectPass, essentially a digital cruise control system for towboats. The carbon-fibre dash presents the driver with a full compliment of navigational aids for maximum control and visibility.

For ballast, the X-Star features a single 60-gallon centre ballast bladder and two 36-gallon ballast glands flanking the 215- litre fuel tank. Fill every cell to the brim, and the boat will weigh another 1,400 to 1,500 lb. Bigger wakes translate to longer suspensions and higher altitudes for the wakeboarder.

MasterCraft's cockpit layout is towboat friendly and also allows for socializing. The u-shaped lounge wraps around the entire cockpit. The observer's seat lifts to reveal the largest storage area, also accessible from the bow. There is a beverage cooler under the centre, most forward bow cushion.

Aft, a colossal sunlounge covers three separate compartments, the centre panel lifting to reveal MasterCraft's MCX 350 MPI, a Vortec HO V-Drive engine. The release latch is hidden between the upholstered panels. For secure footing, there is a rubber traction pad on the swim platform.

High quality components, including pistons, hinges and hardware have been selected for the X-Star. MasterCraft's construction process is impressive and the company backs up claims with a transferable limited lifetime warranty.

As a towboat of this calibre should, the X-Star delivers a wonderful ride, exceptional handling and the wake quality that wakeboarders need. Without ballast, the boat feels solid as a rock, even as I cranked the hull into some pretty big waves. I especially enjoyed turning when accelerating to plane.

With plenty of snap, the X-Star launches out of the hole in 3.8 seconds, travels from 0 to 30 mph in seven seconds and can run from 20 to 40 mph in eight seconds. Considering its weight and size, we were impressed. Top-end speed showed 44.3 mph on GPS. Instruments on the test boat were disconnected, so I couldn't calculate cruising speeds. Rest assured, however, that the Perfect Pass unit will hold the boat steady at any speed you wish.

I really love to drive and the MasterCraft X-Star feels like a driver's boat.Well-contained in my bucket seat, I also enjoyed flipping up the thigh support for a better view, especially when docking. At rest or at speed, this boat rocks - but not in the literal sense.
