2004 Princecraft Princecraft Pro 179 DXSC Description
Princecraft builds a wide range of aluminum deckboats and fish 'n skis, as well as a number of luxurious pontoons. For all that, though, Princecraft is mainly about fishing. This year the Quebec-based builder introduces a new series in its Pro Fishing line with four new models - the Pro DXSC, Pro 179 DX BT, Pro 179 LX and Pro 169 BT.

I had a chance to test the Pro 179 DXSC at the 2004 product media rollout last summer on the Ottawa River. The Pro 179 DXSC was powered with a Mercury 135-hp OptiMax with its two-stage direct fuel injection powering the boat to a top speed of 54 mph at 5,600 rpm.

More impressive was its ability to accelerate, pushing the boat from 0 to 20 mph in 3.78 seconds and 0 to 30 mph in 5.78 seconds. That will certainly get you to your favourite fishing spot in a hurry.

The boat came onto plane quickly at approximately 17 mph and cruised along at 31 mph at 3,500 rpm.The acceleration provided by the Mercury OptiMax was impressive at all levels. You could feel the boat jump forward whenever the throttle was pushed wide-open. Driving along the Ottawa River in relatively calm water I put the boat through a series of turns and manoeuvres at different speeds and could not help but notice how well the boat tracked.

The Pro 179 DXSC is comprised of a raised casting platform in the bow with an anchor storage compartment, deepcycle battery storage compartment, livewell and pedestal seat-mount floor base.At the rear of the boat is an aft raised casting platform with a battery storage compartment, livewell and pedestal seatmount floor base.

The main cockpit area of the boat has four-pedestal seat-mount floor bases, and the boat I tested had three pedestal folding seats. The bow livewell has a capacity of 77 L and is 44" long - big enough for most catches.

The dual livewell has timed-aeration, recirculation, through-hull drain, and a removable minnow bucket. The stern livewell is similar but not quite as big with no removable minnow bucket.

The boat comes with a X-51 fish/ depthfinder and seven-foot lockable rod storage compartment with supports. Mounted in the bow section is a 24V deluxe bow trolling motor panel with Marinco plug and receptacle, voltmeter, tilt switch and wiring harness.

The side console helm comes with a smoked windscreen with quick release, necessary gauges (tachometer, voltmeter, speedometer, trim and fuel) and weatherprotected 50-watt AM/FM marinegrade stereo with cassette.

Princecraft does such a nice job with the aluminum hull that you have to take a second glance to make sure it really is aluminum and not fibreglass. The fit and finish of the Pro 179DX SC was certainly up to the standards you become accustomed to when reviewing a Princecraft. The company continues as a leader in the aluminum boat business when it comes to craftsmanship. The boat is available in three colour combinations: blue with blue carpet, red with red carpet and black with antelope carpet.

With its combination of comfort and fishing convenience, the Pro 179DXSC definitely has my vote for a day on the water, whether you're chasing elusive fish or cruising a favourite waterway.
