2004 Sea Ray Sea Ray 180 Sport Description
When I think of Sea Ray boats, I immediately think of sport cruisers, sport yachts and yachts. I sometimes forget that they make an extensive lineup of sport boats ranging from the new 180 Sport to the 240 Sundancer, with 12 models in between.

New for 2004 is the 180 Sport. I was able to test it near the Sea Ray factory in Knoxville,Tennessee. The 180 Sport is the smallest of the Sea Ray boats offered with the propulsion package of the 3.0L MerCruiser and an Alpha One sterndrive.

The 180 Sport comes in a variety of colours - black, blue, green, red and yellow optional two-tone gelcoat finish with matching graphics. The cockpit of the 180 I tested had two swivel bucket seats with a bench seat big enough for three. (Optional layouts are available such as two bucket seats with jump seats beside the engine or a bucket seat at the helm with back-to-back lounger and aft jump seats.)

Across the stern is an integrated swim platform with a built-in ladder for easy access from the water. The layout with the bench seat tended to lessen leg room compared with the jump seats beside the motor, but I like the advantage of the sun pad for the type of boating I like to do, which includes lazy days on the water anchored out in a favourite swimming area.

The helm is backlit with low-glare night lighting and includes fuel, oil pressure gauges, speedometer and tachometer, with LCD hourmeter, trim and water temperature gauge.Across the rear of the boat over the engine box is a full sunpad with an enclosed storage area beneath. The radio system on board is a 12V Clarion AM/FM/CD stereo.

Throughout the cockpit and bowrider area are six beverage holders. There's storage space under the cushions in the bow section, and storage netting under the port dash and in the side panels.

In the floor of the boat is a storage area big enough for a ski or wakeboard and accessories. The floor of the boat is made of finished fibreglass manufactured using the closed-mould RTM system. Carpet is optional.

I would have liked to have seen a slightly bigger engine in the boat, however, as I felt the hole shot was slow - taking 5.6 seconds to reach 20 mph and 9.3 seconds to reach 30 mph, with only two people on board. The boat is definitely designed to let boaters enjoy a leisurely day on the water cruising along at 25 to 30 mph. No matter the speed, I found the boat most comfortable.

On the water, the 180 Sport performed well. The speed is what you'd expect with the 3.0 L MerCruiser sterndrive. Still, it accelerates to a top speed of 41 mph, planning at 17 mph or 2,800 rpm and cruises effortlessly along at 3,500 rpm or 26 mph, a fine speed for taking in the beautiful scenery of Tennessee. The boat felt solid in the water as we cut across the wakes of the larger Sea Ray cruisers that were on the river at the same time. It felt like a larger boat than 18 feet. The deep-V Sea Ray hull corners well and tracks straight as an arrow.

The 180 Sport, with its matching trailer (with a swing-away tongue), is definitely all Sea-Ray and will make an ideal trailerable boat for exploring North America's many inland waterways.
