Mariah Boats built a strong niche in the 1990s runabout market with well-finished boats that came loaded with standard equipment. When Mariah closed the doors of its Illinois factory in 2001, though, the concept of building over-equipped boats also came to an end.
TheMariah line of boats was resurrected in 2003 by the South Carolina-based manufacturer that also builds Sea Fox fishing boats. While not loaded down with equipment, the new Mariahs are well designed, capable runabouts well suited for family boating.
TheMariah R-19.9 test boat has several options that will appeal to family boaters, including a convenient, easy-clean full fibreglass cockpit liner, bolster-bottom seats, a Bimini top, and bow and cockpit covers. The sporty steering wheel, well-crafted bucket seats and Mariah badges are about the only reminders of the boats heritage.
Good sea-keeping comes standard with the test boats 19-degree deadrise modified-V hull. A 190-hp V6 MerCruiser 4.3 LTKS sterndrive provides peppy performance. In acceleration tests, the R-19.9 reaches 20 mph in four seconds flat and 30 mph in less than eight seconds.
Top speed is 44.5 mph at 4900 rpm, with cruising speeds of 32.2 mph at 3500 and 25.5 mph at 3000 rpm. The test boat was still on plane at about 18 mph at 2500 rpm, indicating the hull retains many of the easily driven qualities that were Mariah hallmarks in the past.
The R-19.9 is also a top performer in the interior design department, with bow area and cockpit layout and space utilization that are sure to be crowd pleasers. In the open bow compartment, rounded sections in the forward seats mean comfortable, usable space for at least three passengers. In the cockpit, the coamings are minimized to create more interior volume, resulting in a cockpit that feels very spacious.
Hidden under a flip-up section of sun lounge, the starboard-side walkway aft to the swim platform offers safe passage. As well as hiding the walkway, the hinged section of sun lounge can also be used to create a more comfortable lounging seat aft. A cavernous locker under the walkway will also prove to be a space saver.
It is inspired design touches included as standard equipment, like those found on the R-19.9, that will help Mariah build a new niche.
