2009 Ranger Boats 620V Fisherman Description

Ranger builds fibreglass boats for many different fishing styles, but is still best known for bass boats. So it’s inevitable the company’s distinctive bass boat flavour finds its way into every Ranger.

The 620VS Fisherman it’s a beefy 20-foot, 3-inch multi-species generalist that will work well in the pursuit of walleye (pickerel to Canadians), panfish, muskie, trout or even bass. It has a Rite-Track Keel and modified-V hull to help it handle big water. And it even has a tall weather-taming windscreen. But a red and grey metal-flake finish proudly shows off its bass boat roots.

From a fishing point of view, bass boats get plenty right. So, a long list of all-round fishing amenities comes along with bass boat style. On the 620VS’s foredeck, Ranger includes a spacious casting deck, two voluminous storage lockers, a six-rod storage locker, plus a drained cooler and a baitwell. Aft, there’s another carpeted casting deck plus a full-width livewell, a massive storage locker (suitable for tonneaus or tops), a smaller carpeted storage locker and a battery locker. Since they will hold valuable gear, all the compartments lock.

As an all-round fishing boat, the 620VS test boat has engines all round – the main 250-hp outboard and a Mercury 9.9 Four Stroke kicker aft and a Minn Kota Maxxum Pro 80 electric trolling motor forward. The main engine has push-button starting, while the kicker starts with a key and is linked to the main Sea Star hydraulic steering system.

There are swivelling bucket helm and companion seats, plus two more casting seats fore and aft.

The 620VS also shares a bass boat’s need for speed. The Mercury OptiMax ProXS 250, a twostroke direct-fuel-injection outboard mounted on an integrated setback bracket, pushes the boat to a top speed of 60.1 mph at 5500 rpm. The boat runs comfortably between 35 and 45 mph, from 3000 to 4500 rpm.

In acceleration tests, the boat reaches 30 mph in less than 10 seconds. Like the top speed, this will only improve as the engine’s SmartCraft management system senses the boat is broken-in (the fresh test boat was limited to 90 per cent performance). SmartCraft also provides a full spectrum of engine data including fuel consumption.

With an eight-foot beam, the 620VS has plenty of brawn, but it also got brians with SmartCraft on-board. If the Ranger 620VS pulls into town and heads for the launch ramp, fish of all species better beware.
