The 18- to 21-foot range of boats has to be one of the most competitive markets for manufacturers to get into. With more styles than you know what to do with, how does one boat builder set itself apart from the rest? Pioneer Boats has asked them selves that very question and have found an answer.
The answer comes in the form of well made boats at a reasonable price that dont compromise style or safety. In their fleet, Pioneer Boats offer centre consoles, bay boats and fish/ski bowriders like the 197 Venture.
I had the pleasure of putting the 197 Venture through its paces in Muskokas Lake Joe, the whole while thinking there will soon be a lot more of these boats at the cottage docks. And rightfully so.
The 197 Venture features seating for eight, including a fully padded bow section and grab rails as well as an in-dash cooler for a day of entertaining on the water. The wraparound windshield adds styling and practicality and the stainless steel tow bar leaves the option for watersports.
With a 17-gallon live well and dual gunwale rod storage, the 197 Venture doesnt disappoint when its time to fish either. What strikes me most about this boat is the moulded non-skid interior, which can withstand the test of any cottage whether it is little muddy feet or fish scales. A quick spray of the hose and the self-bailing cockpit is shining new again.
On the water, the good impressions continued as the 150-hp Yamaha four-stroke shot us up onto plane in just over three seconds and up to a top speed of 46.6 mph at 5800 rpm. Although the lake was pretty choppy, I felt safe and secure even at top speed. Cruising at a comfortable 24 mph at 3500 rpm, the helm was a quiet 90 dbA.
A perfect starter boat, dont be surprised if you start to see more of these versatile Pioneers on the water as the company continues to break into the Canadian market.
