2008 Sea Ray 55 Sundancer Description
My first Sundancer was a 34 we had the use of while waiting for our 39 Express to be delivered, so I get the concept. Equipping the boat with v-drives allows the engines to be moved well aft, thus extending the living area down below quite significantly. This can also result in a bow up aspect. As long as the engines are powered up to compensate for the loss of power through the extra gears in the vdrives, all is well.
Measuring a length overall of 60 feet, the new-for-2008 Sea Ray 55 Sundancer is one of the largest in the lineup. Overall, the company is known for its commitment to an uncompromising standard of excellence, but this holds even truer in the yacht category, where the vessels must epitomize luxurious cruising.
I was given the opportunity to explore the new 55 Sundancer in the midst of Canadian winter. Although I was unable to take it to the waves for a test, I welcomed the chance to poke around this highly praised addition to Sea Ray’s offering for 2008.
Two sets of moulded-in steps with teak treads – one to port and one to starboard – lead to the aft deck from the 55 Sundancer’s expansive integrated swim platform. You cannot help but be immediately struck by the stunning (and practical) aft deck. Furthest aft, there is an Lshaped seat with fibreglass storage bases and a built-in grill with fibreglass lid.
Moving forward, there is a step up to the innovative carousel dining area that can be modified to adjust the seating to fit the type of entertaining you want to do, with appropriate set up for different numbers of guests. Teak flooring adds to the look and comfort of both the carousel area and the wet bar with concealed sink and faucet located to port.
Another step up finds you at the cockpit. The companion helm seat features armrests, reclining backrests, stainless steel footrests and heavy-duty pedestals with slides, swivels and pneumatic vertical adjustments. The captain of this ship is sure to ride in comfort as well as in style. The double companion seat to port also features armrests and fold-down footrests.
The helm utilizes just two screens for all gauges, making for a very tidy setup. The sight line forward is excellent and aft will be fine when you are used to the distances. The fibreglass hardtop with enclosure has two independent retractable sunroofs – one to port, the other to starboard. For all your sun worshippers onboard, the bow sun pad set up will be a hit.
Down below, the 55 Sundancer layout follows the usual template for peak, salon, galley and mid-cabin layout. However, there are a few differences. Dark wood on Express and Dancer models can often result in a tomb-like affect, but the cherry wood treatment on the 55 works. There is sufficient lighting below from outside ambient filtering through port and starboard skylights and side ports, as well as from an array of options for halogen accent and full lighting. The lightcoloured accents and ultraleather upholstery also help to brighten the area.
The wood joinery on this particular model is the best I have seen on any Sea Ray yet, and the cabinet hardware is definitely top of line.Translucent glass, which is used sporadically throughout, adds a nice touch to the cabinetry.
From the cockpit, you enter the luxuriously appointed galley down the teak entryway steps with stainless steel handrail. This flows nicely into the wood floored galley equipped with such stainless steel appliances as an under-counter freezer with icemaker, an under-counter refrigerator, and microwave/convection oven. Other appliances in the galley include a three-burner stove with solid surface cover, and a washer/dryer combo. The chef onboard will be pleased to find lots of storage in the cabinets, which feature dedicated plate and glass storage, and in the slide-out pantry.
A 32-inch LCD HD television for the salon retracts into the galley island, so it’s nicely tucked away. The television is only one part of the entertainment centre that will keep you and all your guests occupied when you’re spending time down below. The centre features a Bose home theatre system, CD and DVD player, and universal remote.
The wood flooring and cherry wood cabinetry continue in the salon area, creating a nice flow to the area.An Lshaped sofa to starboard, upholstered in ultraleather, converts to a bed – extending the sleeping options to six (although we all know cruising vessels are best for two!). Storage in this area can be found in the end tables and gunwale cabinets.
The fore peak with queen-size berth, cedar-lined walk-in closet and dedicated head makes sure your guests are travelling as comfortably as you are. Besides plenty of storage, this stateroom also features an entertainment centre with a 20-inch flatscreen LCD television and DVD player.
Back at the stern, the full-beam master stateroom has side ports of real size on either side of the vessel that makes the room feel airy and light. A small table with convenient seating is positioned beside one of the ports. Perhaps most notable in this stateroom is the innerspring queen-size mattress with actuating headrest and footrest, massage function (with remote control) and gas-assisted lift.
The master’s entertainment centre boasts a 26-inch flatscreen LCD television with Bose media centre, and most of the furniture provides plenty of storage to keep items neatly tucked away. The master ensuite head is beautifully appointed with tile backsplash, mirrored medicine cabinet, shower with seat and mirrored privacy door.
On a more practical note, the engine room is truly a beautiful thing – a mechanics dream. You could bring the party down here with the amount of space available. There is 6 feet, 8 inches of headroom and it is a full easy walk around to both of the Mans. There is no single key component that is not readily accessible here.
Also noteworthy, the unified electrical control panels are a new touch – quite literally. The electronic power distribution system with 10.4-inch touch screen has touch-pad wall switches and systems monitoring capability. They control lighting, air conditioning and the televisions.
Sea Ray has gone all out for “wow factor” on the 55 Sundancer. As a boater familiar with the brand, I even have to let out a little wow at what the company has accomplished with their new addition. On balance, this vessel over-delivers on just about every criteria.
