2008 Sea Ray 330 Sundancer Description
As North America’s best-known builder of express cruisers, Sea Ray has a lot at stake when it launches a new design. When it is redesigning one of its most popular models, as with the 330 Sundancer, the new boat has to offer some practical features experienced cruisers will appreciate, while pumping up the style quotient to help attract new buyers.
Sea Ray’s signature sweeping sheerline is accentuated by an optional black coloured hull on the 330 test boat. It looks great. The designers also add an extra-wide radar arch that’s really a mini-hardtop. With the addition of a canvas Bimini, it turns the cockpit into an easily usable indoor/outdoor entertainment area.
Some of the other advancements on the boat are harder to see right away, like the Digital Throttle and Steering and the optional SmartCraft system that goes with it. On the test boat, the SmartCraft system works with the twin
6.2-litre MPI MerCruiser sterndrives to offer features that improve handling and keep the skipper better informed.
For starters, the SmartCraft Vessel View gauges show very accurate engine information, including fuel consumption. Then there are speed control settings at the controls. In close quarters, you can put the boat into “dock”
mode, limiting the engine speed to 1250 rpm.
At the stern, you can’t get past the broad swim platform without encountering the first feature – a fold-down transom seat that’s perfect for quiet afternoons at the anchorage. There’s still plenty of storage for power cords and other equipment in the transom.
The test boat is also equipped with an optional generator to keep all the neat electric gadgets working, including an electric BBQ grill in the cockpit, the galley fridge and microwave/coffeemaker, plus the optional flatscreen TVs. The forward TV works well with a berth that can be raised electrically into a seating position.
On the water, the new 330 Sundancer has all the speed and performance it needs with standard twin 320-hp V8 engines driving twin counter-rotating props on Bravo Three sterndrives. In testing, the boat is on plane in less
than 10 seconds and hits 30 mph in 12.9 seconds. It cruises comfortably and efficiently at 21.9 mph at 3200 rpm, but 3500 rpm pumps the 330 up to a 27 mph cruising speed.
If you’re in a hurry, the boat still runs smoothly at 33.5 mph at 4000 rpm and tops out at 42 mph at 4800 rpm, easily handling waves and weather.
Other new touches, like the unique parallelogram- shaped port lights, are practical as well as stylish. With the 330 Sundancer, Sea Ray once again proves it knows how to combine form and function in a mid-sized cruiser.
