2008 Premier Pontoons 235 S-series Description
As books are often judged by their covers, boats are judged by their visible designs. So most folks think pontoon boats are slow and ponderous, best used for slow cruises around the lake, sunbathing and fishing. But if
Premier has its way, pontoon prejudices such as those will be a thing of the past.
Many builders have added triple-log configurations for higher power and speeds. With most, though, handling remains inexact. Welding angular strakes to the pontoons helps, but Premier goes even further with its PTX performance hull.
Offered as an option, the setup combines a 36-inch U-shaped centre log (with 12 inches of flat running surface) with sharply angled and strategically placed lifting strakes on the inner sides of the two outside logs. A 55-gallon fuel tank and large storage locker built into the centre hull combine to keep weight low, while its higher aspect and larger centre pontoon improve sea-keeping.
If the performance of the Premier 235 S-series test boat – powered by a Yamaha F225 fourstroke outboard – is any indication, the pontoon world is poised for a shakeup. Well-finished and well-equipped, the 235 could either be labelled a “category killer” or an entirely new boat category – a luxury pontoon runabout.
Acceleration is great, with the boat reaching 20 mph in 4.16 seconds and 30 mph in 6.59 seconds. Top speed in testing is 40.1 mph at 6200 rpm, with far-from-sedate cruising speeds of 27.7 mph at 5000 rpm and 23.2 mph at 4500 rpm.
The 235 S-series really shows its stuff in highspeed turns. Throw the steering wheel over and the boat carves a turn as tight as any runabout. With a pontoon as fast as a runabout that handles almost as well as a ski boat, who needs a specialized fleet?
Premier doesn’t rely on performance alone, but offers a host of luxury features as standard equipment. The test boat (Berber carpet was its only upgrade) comes with a heavy-duty 11-foot Bimini top with stainless-steel quick-connects, ultra-comfortable Flexsteel helm and companion seats, walk-through glass windscreen, convertible canvas change room, dinette table, playpen cover, hydraulic steering, tilt wheel and Kenwood fourspeaker
    CD stereo.
Premier uses its patented EZ hinge on seats, allowing the bench seat bottoms to be opened two ways for access to storage. Seat bottoms are built with vacuum-formed grooves to channel water away from cushions. A five-step aft boarding ladder is adult-friendly. The aft sun lounge over the engine keeps it extra quiet and a solid Ushaped tow bar over the outboard makes watersports hookups easy.
With chaise-style twin lounges forward and an L-shaped lounge aft, there’s plenty of room. Big wide lift-latch gates ease access fore and aft.
Because it looks and feels like a “normal” luxury pontoon at rest, the 235 S-series is easy to underestimate. Powered-up and underway, it’s unmistakably unique.
