2008 Mastercraft X-14 Description
Turn on the lights, crank up the music – let’s have a party! Hop aboard
MasterCraft’s new X-14 and that’s what you’ll get. That is, of course, if you want to rock, wakeboard and roll. Given its hull design and luxurious interior, the X-14 is wellqualified to perform in a dual capacity – tournament tow machine and full-featured sport boat.
We had the pleasure of testing the X-14 on a warm, sunny fall day, with the wind delivering a solid one-and-a-half foot chop. Having eyed the X-14’s bottom, I questioned how its primarily flat surface would perform in rough
water. To my surprise, the ride felt cushioned and comfortable compared to the X-9 model it replaced.
With the X-14, MasterCraft has stretched and widened its award-winning X-7 hull design and integrated a number of hi-tech features to deliver a better cross-over towboat, particularly on the ski side. Equipped with three hard, plastic ballast tanks equipped with automatic shutoff sensors, weight balance is excellent.
Examining the boat’s wake under power, one quickly sees the crest turn from hard to soft depending on speed. The X-14’s hull works exceptionally well at both wakeboard and waterskiing speeds, which are arrived at in a
    mere four to six seconds.
Planing in three seconds, MasterCraft’s Vortec MCX, a 5.7-litre engine producing 350 hp, shows its metal at mid-range. The X-14 accelerates from 0 to 40 mph in 11 seconds and when planting the throttle running 20 mph, rushes to 40 in 8.2 seconds. Turning 4950 rpm, the engine is geared to hit a top speed of 42.2 mph.
As expected, the boat turns tight, almost within its own length. It performs just as brilliantly as it is built, with visible evidence of craftsmanship throughout. Rated to accommodate 11 people, the X-14’s interior structure is
fully integrated with its deck, making it solid and quiet at speed.
Among the features that caught our attention were snap-out carpeting, an optional Bimini top mounted firmly overhead, and a hinged, traditional teak swim platform that saves space when storing and is sure to please purists.
MasterCraft’s wave-free glasswork is set off by the X-Series’ Bulls-Eye Graphics. Inside, durable upholstery covers everything from the engine hatch to a one-piece roto-cast base for the companion seat. You can’t help but love the J-configured bench that runs down the starboard side, across the transom and port-forward. The operator’s and passenger’s seats are
heated – magic on cold days.
Best new feature goes to MasterCraft’s Visual Display Gauge, where one can monitor engine performance, check ballast tank levels and watch videos of extreme water activities. This boat needs to be seen and driven to appreciate its true worth.
