2008 Polar Kraft Kodiak V169 FS Description
In an increasingly specialized world, where even athletic shoes come in myriad sub-categories, the wide range of species-specific fishing boats on the market should come as little surprise.
Despite the value of specialized gear for some styles of fishing, most of my favourite fishing boats are “multi-species,” easily used for various kinds of fish. In the case of the Polar Kraft Kodiak V169FS, the boat can also be used for all-round boating by the human species.
The aluminum V169FS has all the fishing features you need for catching bass, walleye (pickerel), panfish or even salmon. It’s got carpeted casting decks and livewells fore and aft, a Minn Kota X-55 electric trolling motor and a Lowrance X-47 fishfinder.
I usually prefer boats 18 feet or longer for deep-water boating on Lake Huron’s Georgian Bay, where I tested the V169. But the 16 foot, 9 inch Polar Kraft passed the practical test, handling some big bay swells with confidence and ease. The boat’s high topsides and V-hull provide big-water performance. Its wide aluminum side-decks will make it easy to mount downriggers for salmon and trout fishing.
The V169’s tall walk-through windscreen provides plenty of protection. A Bimini and full stand-up canvas top will keep off sun or rain and block cool breezes. A snap-on flap that breaks the breeze from the foredeck is a thoughtful addition.
When fishing’s finished and it’s time for watersports (or a cruise around the lake), lift out a carpeted insert in the bow area, drop in cushions and you’ve got a family bowrider. The four swivelling seats in the cockpit are comfortable, with lots of legroom. Add a watersports towing bridle or tow-post and
you’ll be ready for a day of tubing, skiing or wakeboarding. The Jensen MSR 4050G AM/FM/CD stereo provides the soundtrack.
For fishing, watersports or all-round fun on the water, the Evinrude E-TEC 115 works very well. With a 21-inch pitch stainless- steel prop, the engine pushed the V169 to a top speed of 46.2 mph at 6200 rpm and cruised nicely at about 30 mph at 3000 rpm and 35 mph at 3700 rpm.
At all speeds the E-TEC was extremely quiet, registering 83 dbA at the helm and 87 in the aft seat at top speed, and an almost inaudible 62 dbA at idle.
The E-TEC – a direct fuel-injection twostroke that sips gasoline, needs little maintenance, and starts and performs on command – is a great companion to the versatile V169. Like the boat, it’s a great all-round player in an often over-specialized world.
