2008 Smoker Craft Reporter 151 Side Console Description
The Smoker Craft Resorter 151, a fairly well-equipped 15-foot aluminum
runabout, falls into two different boating niches at the same time.
First of all, the Resorter is a great allround, get-out-there fishing boat. A couple of big steps above a basic utility, it’s got more comfort and better open-water performance than most bare-bones fishing boats.
        Powered by a 40-hp DF40 Suzuki fourstroke, the 151 Resorter is also a barely-legalteen fun-boat.
As a capable fishing boat, the 151 Resorter’s qualities and layout are simple and clear. It has a good-sized casting platform with an aluminum livewell and a spacious locking storage locker forward. Aft, the portable fuel tank and battery are housed beneath another good-sized casting deck.
There are comfortable folding, swivelling seats at the helm and companion positions, with additional sockets for optional seat placements on the fore and aft casting platforms. There’s a rack for open rod storage in the port-side coaming.
The side helm console is also simple but effective, with a short windscreen and basic gauges. The rubberized steering wheel and single-lever Suzuki controls are well-placed. The test boat is equipped with a Minn Kota Power Drive electric trolling motor, mounted on the port-side bow. There’s a handy location for a fishfinder on the right side of the helm.
What I like best about the 151’s interior is the vinyl floor covering. Carpet may have a slight advantage in its non-skid qualities – as long as it’s dry. But vinyl is far easier to keep clean. As a multi-species all-round fishing boat that gets ridden hard and put away wet, the 151 Resorter will clean up easily and age well.
As a teen fun-boat, the boat’s qualifications are even more straightforward. As powered, the test boat is legal in Canada for children aged 12 to 16. With its attractive red hull topsides and graphics and neutral interior, it has some style.
The test boat could save many a weekend for members of the 12- to 16-year-old set, who are often forced to accompany their parents to summer cottages whether they like it or not. At just over 30 mph, the boat’s top speed is unlikely to frighten many parents. For kids, that’s plenty fast, especially on an open boat. There’s also plenty of power and enough speed to take fellow teens water-skiing, tubing or wakeboarding.
Anyone who’s had to deal with sullen, unhappy 15-year-olds – or cranky old anglers, for that matter – will know that a boat specifically designed to keep them happy on the water is worth its weight in gold.
