2002 Yamaha Pwc FX 140 Description
As one of the largest engine- builders in the world, it was only a matter of time before we would see a four-stroke engine in a watercraft from Yamaha. In light of the major environmental issues and criticism from the non-watercraft segment of the industry, there seems to be little to complain about.
Yamaha’s new marine MR-1 engine has patented five-valve technology, fuel injection and double overhead cam. It should prove to be a winner. Its advanced technology will actually shut off the engine if the watercraft rolls over, preventing lubricating oil from going into the wrong areas of the engine.
Gone are the days of two-stroke oil and smoke. Now the welcome sound of a purring four-stoke will be all that is heard. Fuel savings should prove to be sizeable with considerably better range than past models. The enthusiasts will appreciate the exceptional torque and linear power band of this 140-hp powerplant, making water skiing, tubing and touring so much more enjoyable.
On a safety note, Yamaha has added a thrust directional enhancer system, which aids in manoeuvrability at high and low speeds where steering is required. The new hull is seven inches longer than a traditional three-seater, giving it more stability especially when loading or in rough water conditions.
Yamaha designed a great new hull to compliment the performance of its new engine. The storage compartments are accessible for passengers on board and large enough to carry plenty of touring gear.
Progressive stepped hull, improved dashboard layout, comfortable seats and, let’s not forget -- the cup-holders. This new model seems to have it all; sleeker shape, advanced hull design, a wide power band with speeds just under 60 mph with 30 percent better fuel consumption.
With the improvements made to four-stroke engines for marine use, this model deserves serious consideration when you visit your local dealership.
