2002 Sea Doo PWC GTX DI Description
Personal watercraft manufacturers have faced many challenges in recent years, making their machines quieter, more efficient and safer.
Bombardier, for one, has tried several different routes to reduce emissions – Rotax Fuel Injection (RFI), Direct Fuel Injection (based on Australian Orbital technology that is also used in Mercury’s OptiMax engines) and now, four-stroke technology (see above article).
This year, as well as introducing one of the first four-stroke-powered personal watercraft, Sea-Doo has kept its Direct Injection engines. Since Bombardier also now owns the FICHT direct-injection two-stroke technology used in Evinrude outboards ourboard engines as well as Kawasaki and Polaris PWCs, it seems likely that Sea-Doo will eventually instal FICHT-technology engines in its watercraft.
In the meantime, though, the three-seat touring-style GTX DI features the new-style GTX hull and Sea-Doo’s innovative and effective Off Power Assisted Steering (O.P.A.S.) along with a strong argument for keeping DI technology – a newly designed 130-hp DI engine.
Working closely with Orbital representatives, Sea-Doo’s engineers rejigged the DI’s combustion chambers, reducing the number of ports from six to five.  The changes help the engine pump out more torque.
While the hull and engine changes don’t make the 2002 GTX DI faster at top end than last year’s version (with the old-style GTX hull), acceleration is greatly improved, as are mid-range cruising speeds.
While many (myself included) believed it would be impossible to improve on the GTX hull – arguably the finest combination of close-quarters handling and big-wave,  high-seas comfort – the new GTX hull seems to have maintained the old one’s big-water capabilities while providing sportier close-quarters handling.
With the torque-laden punch of the DI engine and the sporty performance of the new  GTX hull the Sea-Doo GTX DI, available in blue or green colour schemes, is sure to be a top watercraft contender.
