2002 Boston Whaler 170 Montauk Description
There are worse things in life than being trapped on a deserted island with a volleyball named Wilson.
People are living with unimaginable regret, having purchased a Montauk wannabe.
Of course I’m kidding – sort of. Having tested many cathedral-style hulls similar to Boston Whaler’s classic 17-footer, I have yet to find one more appealing. The centre-console Montauk literally cradles you, after all, with its Unibond construction and non-absorbent high-density foam; it is the unsinkable legend.
Boats in the Montauk’s size range are always in demand. At 16 ft. 7 in. long, it’s magnificent for fishing, pulls a mean tube, cruises high and dry and makes a great family water taxi. Best yet, it can accomplish all of this without much power and thrives on waves and wind.
A Mercury four-stroke 40-hp motor was clamped to the transom, with electronic fuel injection added for 2002. While options include a 90-hp motor, the 40 works amazingly well, topping out at 30 mph and running slow enough to troll. It’s also legal for licensed 14-year-old solo drivers.
The Montauk’s test data looks great. It planes in 4.53 seconds hitting 15 mph, accelerates to 24 mph in 8.7 seconds and reaches its peak 30-mph speed in 16.9 seconds. Accelerating from 20 to 30 takes 10.6 seconds. The boat cruises nicely at 20.8 mph at 4,700 rpm.
The hull feels exceptionally solid when turned at full speed, and the prop doesn’t ventilate unless trimmed out. Actually, little positive trim is required to make the 170 Montauk perform at its peak. The boat runs free and clean over the waves, and doesn’t porpoise, regardless of speed.
Inside, the boat has a deep centre console equipped with neat features such as two dry storage areas. The battery is also located here. The helm station and dash are quite plain, but outfitted with the necessary Mercury gauges, switches and a horn. A stainless-steel steering wheel adds class.
The console’s Plexiglas windshield is surrounded by a stainless steel safety rail, one of many installed throughout the boat. With the Montauk’s low sides and narrow walkways, these railings come in handy.
Forward, there’s a bow locker with through-hull drain and non-skid fibreglass cover. This doubles as a fishwell. The non-skid cover makes for a super casting platform, and with the white, upholstered bow cushion in place, converts to a comfortable seating area.
Whaler is quite creative when it comes to seating arrangements. Forward of the console is a 72-quart igloo cooler strapped to the floor, with a removable seat cushion. The two-person reversible helm seat will be appreciated when you’re fishing off the stern.
Fishing features include six console-mounted rod holders and two vertical rod holders recessed into the pilot’s cushioned, fibreglass seat back. But the Montauk’s best fishing feature may simply be how easily it cleans up after you catch the fish – a fast splash down over the inner-liner’s non-skid surface and bingo, you’re done. You gotta love a low-maintenance boat.
