2002 Larson SEI 180 Description
Competition in the 18- to 20-foot class of bowriders is probably the most intense in the industry. These boats are often called on to be all things to all boaters. With variations in detail, they look very much alike, but can differ dramatically in purpose and function. At one end of the spectrum there are boats dedicated to spirited performance. At the other there are stolid people movers best suited to carrying a load.
Most, however, attempt a compromise and some do that better than others. The Larson SEI 180, we’re pleased to report, does it very well. In Ontario the compromise bowrider would likely be described as a “cottage boat,” that is, a boat with enough performance to satisfy the thrill-seekers and water-toy addicts, plus enough room to carry a family and their gear in seaworthy safety and comfort. Moreover, it has to be simple enough and strong enough to endure years of service. Typically, it would also have to be compact and light enough to be stored on its own trailer.
The Larson satisfies all of these criteria. The first thing we noticed was the boat’s generous freeboard. You sit well down in the SEI and the surrounding sides of the boat impart a feeling of safety and confidence. Our logbook notes that “this boat feels bigger than it is.” Seating is simple and comfortable, swivel buckets and a bench at the stern. Ample carpeted floor space and plenty of storage will handle the cargo. The bow area is constructed using a one-piece fibreglass insert. So important for the young fry who love to ride up there, the bow seating is spacious, well cushioned and the grab-handles are properly placed. Off the stern there’s an integrated swim platform served by a retractable three-step boarding ladder.
Larson has made good use of  moulded modules for the helm station and the port-side console, except for the design of the glove box, which ends up tiny in a space that could have provided generous storage. The helm is a pleasure, conveniently laid out and simple. We gave quiet thanks for the return of handsome, highly readable white-on-black gauges. And for the cupholders mounted low where they’re stable and out of the way. Larson gives the customer a choice of colour schemes, with the white hull contrasted by either blue, green or red. Blue for us.
Seaworthiness is not a challenge for this Larson. At 17’ 6” and 2,150 pounds dry weight it’s readily trailerable, but it puts enough boat in the water to make use of its 21-degree V-bottom. The ride is controlled and uneventful, even in a stiff chop.
Water-skiers will be pleased by the SEI’s brisk acceleration, thanks to the 190 horses of the MerCruiser 4.3 helped along by Larson’s famous Delta-Conic hull shape. Dad will feel good about the boat’s handling. Flat out at well over 40, the boat is stable, revealing no undesirable quirks. A sharp turn won’t unhinge the hull’s composure, but there’s just enough slide to satisfy the Sunday afternoon joyriders.
Checking Diana’s notes again, we found a phrase that sums up our impression of the Larson SEI180: “polished and capable.”
