2002 Sea Ray 182 Bow Rider Description
“Entry-level Sea Ray boat.” Seems like a contradiction in terms, doesn’t it? Even discounted by an aggressive dealer, the 182 will cost more than a similarly sized and equipped boat from most other manufacturers. But what ownership of a 182 Bow Rider gives you is entry into the Sea Ray family of boats.
Is it worth it? Ultimately, that’s a question only you, your heart and your bank manager can answer.
Nevertheless, Sea Ray has made a serious attempt to make this bowrider affordable. It’s a “package boat.” Riding on a custom trailer with
a swing-away tongue, the 182 comes fully equipped including complete Sea Ray instrumentation plus a radio/CD player, but with no choices in seating layout or power, and only some options in canvas tops and covers.
At dockside, the 182 is unmistakably a Sea Ray,  with the company’s signature light cream, beige and grey taupe colour scheme. Light cream dominates the 182, in the hull and across the large engine cover/sun deck which is emblazoned with an embossed Sea Ray logo. Taupe shows up primarily as a dirt-resistant colour in the marine grade carpet.
The two swivel bucket seats, although pleasantly simple in their design, have a shape that contains you, offering a sense of oneness with the boat. Simplicity also describes the full-width rear seat, a clarity of style, however, that also offers real comfort. Unfortunately, the bow area needs more upholstery around the sides and the seat bases aren’t located securely enough. While we’re being picky, situating the radio/CD inside the “glove box” effectively eliminates that space as useful storage.
The engine, MerCruiser’s proven 190-hp 4.3 V-6, is perfect. Only minor performance gains would be obtained with the 210. As it is, 50 mph on a glassy surface with a stock alloy prop is nothing to scoff at. I’d predict another 3-4 mph in a slight chop and probably just under 60 with the right stainless wheel.
Much of that speed can be traced to Sea Ray’s sophisticated hull shape. Entry-level can’t begin to describe the 182’s undersides. The 19-degree V- bottom bristles with angles, splines and strakes. There’s a large notch at the waterline on both chines. And it can be felt from behind the wheel. The thrill is there in the 182; it rides tall in the water and seems to fly. But the boat’s sense of connection with the aqua is impressive. Hold it straight and the hull tracks dead true; swing the wheel and the boat smoothly carves into a turn, no abrupt leaning, no dramatic skid.
All of this is accomplished with astonishingly little noise. Check out the dB levels; the 182 is the quietest 4.3L-equipped boat we’ve tested. Sea Ray has carefully insulated and then sealed off the engine compartment. Unobtrusive throughout the rev range, the engine note was particularly agreeable at 2,800 rpm and that defined our 26 mph cruising speed.
If the 182 Bow Rider is “entry” level boating, we predict a lot of folks will
    want in.
