2002 Princecraft Pro 196 Fishing Description
I have been in a lot of different 19-foot fishing boats, but when you step into the Princecraft Pro 196 Fishing, you can’t help but notice the fit
and finish and the attention to detail.
The layout of the Pro 196 Fishing is typical of most fishing boats, with positioning for  four folding pedestal chairs in the cockpit area (the test boat had three chairs, with one location open and one folded pedestal on the raised casting platform). Power was provided by a 150-hp Mercury  OptiMax, swinging a 19-inch Black Max aluminum prop.
As Princecraft’s President Marcel Dubois pointed out, the new 196s are perfect for the mid-level fisherman looking for maximum value and fishing features in a beamy rig, designed for very big, deep water. Some of the options that weren’t on the test boat, but sure to be popular, are hydraulic steering with tilt steering wheel, a 15-hp “kicker” motor, a full-width rear seat for added passenger comfort, stand-up high canvas top and Princecraft’s unique downrigger mounting plates.
As we pulled away from the dock, to put the boat through sea trials, conditions were choppy.  The boat cut effortlessly through the small waves and carved into the turns without any feeling of hooking. On the stop watch, the boat went from a dead stop to 30 mph in just over five seconds, reaching 40 mph in just over seven seconds.
In a sheltered bay on the Ottawa River, where we were testing the boat, we reached a top speed of 48.8 mph at 5,200 rpm, in radar-verified trials. After spending over an hour driving around in the 196 Fishing, we felt it was time for a little relaxation. We took out the  fishing rods and wet a line, but unfortunately, were unable to land a catch.
Back at the dock I went through the boat more thoroughly. At the bow, on the raised casting area there are three in-floor storage areas and a large baitwell with pull-out bucket. Electrical connections are ready for a trolling motor.
Moving aft through the walk-through windshield into the cockpit, at the helm, the  instrument panel contained a speedo, voltmeter, trim, tach and fuel gauges and a Lowrance X-49 fish/depthfinder. The AM-FM cassette player was located in the glove box, with a retractable antenna in front of the helm and two speakers.
Coamings contain seven-foot rod storage areas with racks. Each of the folding upholstered  pedestal seats is multi-coloured with a screened Princecraft logo, matching the green, red and tan striping of the boat. The floors are carpeted and self-draining. Across the stern of the boat in front of the motor well there are three built-in areas – a large storage area and access to the batteries, a bait bucket, and a large livewell.
Like all Princecraft boats, the Pro 196 Fishing is constructed of 5052-H36 marine grade aluminum alloy – extra-hard, durable aluminum. The Pro 196 comes with a full range of custom-fit canvas options from mooring covers to complete stand-up high top and convertible configurations.
There’s no question – a lot of thought has gone into making the Princecraft Pro 196 Fishing, a boat for serious recreational fishing folks.
