2002 Lund 2025 Pro V Description
Our first view of Lund’s big 2025 Pro V was head-on from about a half-mile away. Charging across a nasty gust- driven lake tortured by three-foot ridges of rough water, the boat was shooting huge sprays of water out to each side. The Lund’s hull sat up on the chop but appeared stable with little pounding.
A dry, comfortable ride at 40 mph in the surf is not what we expect from an aluminum boat. The Pro V’s secret is Lund’s Integrated Power Strake (IPS) hull shape. Starting with a wide (96-inch) beam, the hull’s sides taper only slightly to create a wide (87 3/8 inch!) footprint across the bottom. The width allows Lund to widen the reverse chines, soften their angle and add a flat “Power Strake” along the keel – without compromising the planing surface. As a result, the hull rides high while retaining its stability and delivering a non-turbulent flow of water to the prop.
On board under those conditions you’re struck, not only by the quiet ride, but by the rigidity of the hull. There’s no tin boat “gun’l shake” in this Lund. Just look at those broad gunwales; their width acts as a stiffener the entire length of the hull. Add the contribution of a full floor structure and the Pro V becomes the most integrated-feeling aluminum boat we’ve ever driven.
Our test boat was powered to its rated maximum by Yamaha’s unprecedented 225-hp V-6 four-stroke. This astonishing engine pumps out an impressive amount of power in the most understated way. At around 5,000 rpm passengers can carry on a conversation. That’s at 43 mph in an open boat. Flat out at 52 mph some of the sensation of speed is almost lost with the absence of engine racket. (“We couldn’t possibly be going that fast!”) At idle, with gentle masking sounds from wind and wave, only forward motion lets you know the engine is running.
Speed, comfort and safety are essential parts of the fish boat equation, but convenient fishing is the bottom line. Those ample gunwale surfaces are ideal for mounting downriggers for lake trout or salmon, sometimes walleye – deep-water fish, open-water fish. Anglers who choose that side of the sport are an intrepid breed, willing to endure the worst that the weather can throw at them in their quest for a lunker catch. The 2025 Pro V is a dedicated fish hunter, and everything inside the hull is designed for that task.
The carpet is quality marine grade. There are multiple bases for the very comfortable new-for-2002 Premium Pedestal seats, including stations on the bow and stern casting platforms. There are two aerated bait wells, a rod locker in the floor that will hold 12 poles, plus tackle cabinet built into
the back of the helm console. The 31-gallon livewell will hold a 54-inch fish. A bow-mounted trolling motor is provided with built-in wiring, battery boxes, monitors and a charger. The cleats drop flush, the windshield snaps off the console and the console can be loaded with any conceivable fish finding, navigation or entertainment device. And so on…
The practicalities of piscatorial pursuits notwithstanding, Lund’s Pro V is a handsome devil. As Diana points out, its clean design shows the bluewater influence. High praise for an aluminum fishing skiff, but fish or no fish, the 2025 is a helluva boat.
